MARGARET RIVER HOME
10 Neo Shack is an unbuilt, architect-designed Margaret River home by mi shack® — conceived as a flexible South West home for owners, family and guests. The idea was simple: pull the private sleeping zones apart from the shared living spaces, while keeping the whole home connected, relaxed and easy to use.
It never got built, but it stands as a strong example of how the MIDS system creates a site-specific home — with a little mid-century attitude and a minimalist twist.

THE SITE.
Neo was designed for a Margaret River site that called for a calm South West home — one that could carry owners, family and guests without feeling crowded or overworked, but still feel genuinely connected.
The home needed privacy, shared living, outdoor connection and clear planning logic. So rather than one big open box, it’s built around separate zones linked by a central living spine — simple planning that gives each part of the house a clear role.
THE BRIEF.
The brief was a flexible Margaret River home for owners, family and guests. The owners wanted their own private zone; guests needed space to stay comfortably; and between them, the shared living area had to become the social heart of the home.
So the design had to balance privacy and connection — calm and easy for everyday use, but generous enough for visiting family, friends and longer South West stays.
THE DESIGN RESPONSE.
The design response is simple, clear and relaxed. Neo is shaped through the MIDS system, so the planning starts with clear, adaptable modules — organising the home into practical zones for sleeping, bathing, gathering, cooking, outdoor use and guest stays. (It’s not a standard modular house off a line; the system is adapted to suit the Margaret River setting, the family brief, the need for privacy and the wish for connected living.)
The result is a clean South West home with a strong horizontal form, simple roof lines, open living areas and a restrained material palette.
MARGARET RIVER LIVING.
A good Margaret River home does more than provide bedrooms and bathrooms — it supports the way people actually live. Neo gives the owners privacy while still making room for family, friends and guests, with the shared living zone as the place to gather, cook, talk and slow down.
That balance is the point: open and social when everyone’s together, with space to retreat when it’s needed.
MID-CENTURY CHARACTER.
Neo has a bit of mid-century spirit in its bones — a strong horizontal form, deep roof lines, simple elevations and generous glazing. Those moves keep the home sharp without making it fussy. The result is a Margaret River home with clean lines, relaxed living and a quiet architectural confidence.
THE MIDS BENEFIT.
Neo shows how MIDS creates a personal, site-specific home without starting from a blank page. The design begins with a clear system, then responds to the site, the owners, the guest brief and the way the home would have been used over time.
For clients, that means a more structured, efficient process — while the finished design still feels personal, architectural and connected to its place. A clear starting point, without making every shack the same.
BUDGET GUIDE.
Neo is an unbuilt concept, but as an indicative guide, a comparable Margaret River home of this scale would sit in the range of $2.0–2.5 million to build today — depending on the site, floor area, specification, consultant requirements, approvals, external works and builder availability. That excludes land, consultant and approval fees.

THE STORY BEHIND NEO.
Neo was designed for a family who, sadly, weren’t able to build it. World events, career changes and timing all got in the way — so Neo the family dog never did get his Margaret River “pee tree” after all.
Still, the design stands as a strong example of what the mi shack® system can do. And yes, the name’s a little nod to The Matrix. Hopefully the universe serves up the right coloured pill next time.
